As descrições morfológicas fornecem, de forma inédita, informações importantes relativas à anatomia macroscópica e microscópica do sistema reprodutor feminino dessa espécie.(AU)

Knowledge of the anatomy of any wild animal is of fundamental importance for its preservation and protection. In this context the present study aimed to describe the morphology of the female reproductive system of A. belzebul. We used 6 specimens of A. belzebul, female, adult and free of lesions. It was macroscopically observed that the ovaries are ovoid with smooth surface and the histological analysis in cortical region showed ovarian follicles in different stages of development. The fallopian tubes are anatomically thin and curvilinear, with one mucous layer, one muscular and one serous layer. The uterus was presented in a simple format with a globular fundus, with a highly vascularized myometrium, being organized in bundles of smooth muscle fibers. The anatomical structure of the vagina presented itself as a long thin-walled muscular tube where in the vestibular region the external orifice of the urethra is marked by a bilobed urethral papilla and in the caudal portion in its caudal portion a well-developed clitoris. Regarding the histological analysis of the vagina, a basal extract composed of atrophic non-keratinized stratified squamous epithelium was found in the vaginal mucosa region. The morphological descriptions provide important information regarding the macroscopic and microscopic anatomy of the female reproductive system of this species in an unprecedented way.(AU)

RESUMO

AIM: To evaluate the incidence of root dentinal microcracks after two extraction techniques through micro-computed tomographic (micro-CT) analysis. METHODOLOGY: Thirty pairs of premolars, extracted for orthodontic reasons, were assigned to two experimental groups, following a split-mouth design (n = 30): traumatic technique group (TTG) - teeth extracted following a conventional protocol using forceps, and an atraumatic technique group (ATG) - teeth extracted following an atraumatic technique protocol in which the root was gently detached from the periodontal ligament using a periotome. All teeth were immediately immersed in distilled water and scanned in a micro-CT device within 72 h following the extraction. The assessment of the images was completed on cross-section images by two masked evaluators. The Mann-Whitney test was used to assess the significant differences between the groups regarding the number of cross-sections displaying microcracks whilst the Fischer's exact test was used to assess differences in the frequency of specimens with defects (P < 0.05). RESULTS: A total of 52 750 micro-CT cross-sectional images were evaluated. A total of 352 cross-sections had at least one dentinal defect. Microcracks were observed in five teeth of the TTG group (n = 352 slices) and in two teeth of the ATG group (n = 103 slices). The statistical analysis used was unable to detect a significant difference between the groups in terms of the number of dentinal microcracks (P = 0.233) and in the frequency of teeth displaying microcracks (P = 0.424). CONCLUSION: A small number of sound teeth without endodontic treatment had dentinal microcracks regardless of the extraction technique applied. No difference was noticed between the traumatic and atraumatic techniques in the incidence of microcracks.

No characteristic of living beings is as primal as breathing, and the lungs are the main organs in the respiratory system. This study aims to describe the macroscopic aspects of the trachea, bronchus and lung lobes and microscopic aspects of the bronchi of raccoon lungs and compare with data from the literature studies performed with wild and domestic mammals. We used three samples of Procyon cancrivorus, which were fixed in aqueous 10% formaldehyde, lungs and trachea were dissected and photographed with a digital camera (Sony a200 Camera, 10.2mpx). For the identification of microscopic characteristics, fragments were collected from each bronchus following routine histological techniques. The Procyon cancrivorus lung is divided into four lobes, with two right and left lobes. The trachea has about 31-34 rings. The extrapulmonary bronchi divides into left and right, where the right is divided into lobar bronchi cranial, middle, accessory and caudal lobes and the left in cranial and caudal, with their respective segmental bronchi. Microscopically the bronchial epithelium has prismatic pseudo-ciliated and goblet cells with bundles of smooth muscle fibers, plates of hyaline cartilage and elastic fibers. Knowledge of the morphology of these organs in wild species helps us in descriptive studies and / or comparisons between species.

RESUMO

To evaluate the elastic system fibers in the vesicourethral junction of wistar rats at different ages, histological and histomorphometric studies were conducted. The histology study of the elastic system fibers for selective staining methods showed the presence of three types of elastic fibers. In all age groups studied, histology study satisfactorily showed the structurals differences between the mature elastic fibers, elaunin and oxytalan fibers, which were located among the intercellular spaces of the muscular layer as well as between collagen fibers. Histomorphometric studies have revealed that with the advanced age, there is a decrease in the linear density of the mature elastic and oxytalan fibers, while the linear density of elaunin fibers has increased. Thus, it could be inferred that in the vesicourethral junction of old animals, there is a fall in the elasticity, elastic recoil and anchorage properties due a loss of elastin and microfibrils, but they are compensated by the elaunin fibers, since they show intermediate characteristics between mature elastic fibers and oxytalan fibers. It could be concluded that the aging process of the elastic fibers in the vesicourethral junction does not contribute alone and directly in the urinary incontinence state, but it compensates and gives muscular support, mainly due to the increase of the elaunin fibers, what makes the elastic system in the vesicourethral junction responsible for the maintenance of the urinary continence.
